The Championships took place at Newquay Sports Centre on Saturday 1st February in memory of Cornwall School Athletic Association President Paul Manning, who headed up the CSAA for 56 years until his untimely death recently.
Athletes from 18 schools represented Cornwall in 8 races, against the cream of the 6 SW counties, with eight achieving top 10 positions and the Year 7 Boys’ team taking pride of place with 3rd position.
The Cornish Year 7 Boys’ team was led in by Saltash’s Lucas Sweeney in a superb 2nd position, with Penryn’s Jimmy Vella and Sam Bradbury providing great back up in 5th and 10th respectively.
Our Senior Girls would undoubtedly have placed second, but one athlete had to pull out after the warm up with an injury. Individually, Callywith College’s Holly Reid showed she is getting back to her best, by taking a fine 4th position, with Truro & Penwith’s Roisin Mooney in 7th.
Truro & Penwith provided our top finisher in the Senior Boys’ race with Joe Wylie, who’s stepped up a level this season, placing 10th, and other top 10 Cornish performers were great 4th places for Penair’s Ava Sutton in the Inter Girls’ race, at the bottom of her age group, and Penrice’s Will Pearce, who was also 4th in the Inter Boys’ event.
